Campaign of actions launched around the U2 tour of Australia

In support of and in collaboration with the U.S. Venezuela Solidarity Network (VSN), the Australia Venezuela Solidarity Network has inspired a variety of individuals and groups to protest at upcoming Bono/U2 concerts in Australia and to raise awareness about Bono’s backing of Mercenaries 2, a videogame that simulates the invasion of Venezuela and the overthrow of its government. This is also related to the upcoming G20 meetings in Australia, at which Bono is expected to be a featured celebrity guest.

The Australia Venezuela Solidarity Network discussed the issue of “Mercenaries 2” at their national conference on September 30, 2006. The following actions were announced on the AVSN web page.

Subsequent discussion has resulted in the formation of a national campaign.

This includes a link to the Hands Off Venezuela story about the VSN campaign (click on “International Campaign” within the Melbourne Indymedia story).

On November 5 2006 the AVSN issued a press release: Attention Bono: “If you want to help the poor don't invest in companies that promote killing them.”

If you are interested in contacting Bono and letting your voice be heard about this, read the fact sheet (below) with contact information. We encourage individuals to contact Bono or his representatives directly-this will have the most impact!

Also, our Australian friends have created a podcast ( “Latin Radical –Double Booting Bono”) that includes a “dramatic reading” of the Pandemic Brochure about Mercs 2, with some text from the VSN’s original letter to Bono, sound bites from Bono, and some segments of an Ali Primera classic “Don Samuel” (“Uncle Sam”).
